An intermediate switch on the other hand, which is shown in Figure 4.31, has four connections and is used to control lighting in long corridors or flats that contain multiple floors. However, an intermediate switch has to link all six of the strapper connections, therefore it requires the use of a strip connector block to connect one of the of conductors.

Finally, because of the possibility that a person visiting a bathroom or toilet may have wet hands, lighting in this kind of environment is normally controlled through a pull cord.

It is worth reinforcing that every electrical connection, irrespective of how it is made, must be both electrically and mechanically sound. Electrically sound means that the termination is very low in resistance. This is because badly formed terminations cause a high resistance joint and are the main cause of electrical fires.

Bathrooms are considered as a special location, and lighting is normally controlled through a pull switch.
